Sleep Fictions: A Digital Companion

I.XIV.2 Mirth

The “ugliness” of her room at Mrs. Peniston’s, as it sears its image onto Lily’s interior mind, also has the potential to transform Lily externally. If she remains in such a space over time, her aging face will reflect the drabness of the room itself. More than simply fearing that age will creep upon her while she sleeps, Lily in paranoia imagines that the normal progression of time might become abnormally rapid during deep sleep. She fears that it will speed up to such an extent that she will awaken to her face disfigured by old age.
