Sleep Fictions: A Digital Companion

II.VI.1 Mirth

Lily is finally beginning to realize the importance of quiet and solitude. Although she has become "addicted" as the narrator implies to the noise and high-speed frenzy of her urban lifestyle, she is coming to understand that those elements are having a deteriorating effect. She reflects on how exhausting it is to be "swept along" in "a current of pleasure" of which she has not control. "Weariness"* comes to define how Lily views her place within the social structures of modernity.
