Sleep Fictions: A Digital Companion

I.XIII.3 Mirth

In this moment of reflection, Lily reveals the minute sensations that overwhelm her with night-time dread. Physical convulsions of fear prevent her from bodily stillness and calm, which is necessary for the body to lull itself into a restful sleep. Taken most literally, this can also be read as a symptom of sleep-wake transition which occurs in sleep-states between wakefulness and deep-sleep where the body convulsively jerks itself into a frightful alertness. Medically, this is referred to as PSM or Propriospinal Myoclonus at Sleep Onset.*
