Sleep Fictions: A Digital Companion

WordinSeason

This story features a clever young girl, Josephine, who takes revenge upon her griping, grumpy grandmother by recording everyone's complaints about the old woman and then sneaking a phonograph into her grandmother's room and playing the recordings a her grandmother attempts to sleep.

The grandmother's insomnia seems to be induced by the ticking of the clock. Anxieties over time and sleep arose as common concerns during the era. In the 1916 study The Psychology of Sleep,* Bolton Hall describes the "nervous tortures . . . [of] a clock tick."
