Lily's appreciation for "shar[ing] in the working of the great civic machine"( as opposed to Mrs. Hatch's expectations of "vague attendance") reflects Gilman's endeavor in the Forerunner to establish clearly define the duties, responsible, and social commitments suitable to women according to their social strata. Like Lily, Gilman believed that women of the most power and privilege should take on the responsibility of declaring and implementing such definitions.
