Sleep Fictions: A Digital Companion

II.V.1 Mirth

The activity at the Van Alstyne estate mirrors that of a high-speed rail car. Carry Fisher is described as the "porter" which implies her social inferiority, putting her on par with Lily in regard to their social obligations to their Van Alstyne hosts. The pace, "in life whizzed on with a deafening rattle and roar," reflects how Lily feels about the passage of time. Events seem to zip past her before she can get her bearings and act decisively. By casting Mrs. Gormer as the "conductor" and Carry Fisher as the "porter," the narrator makes clear what individuals direct the pace and those who are merely at the mercy of their "conductors."
