Rowland expects Roderick to function on a dictated timeline. In this case, Roderick is required to meet his mother and Mary Garland upon their arrival to Rome. Roderick, meanwhile, loses track of time in the company of Christina, who "had beguiled him into letting time slip." This slippage of time and responsibility Rowland blames on a potential malicious intent on Christina's part, whom he deems driven by "mysterious impulses."
