This collection includes all notes that address metaphorical social awakenings as well as literal waking from a sleep state.
Kate Chopin's 1899 novel The Awakeningis a well-known example of this theme in the metaphorical sense, in which women experience an "awakening" to the social forces of gender oppression. Gilman takes up a similar theme in her writing.
