Sleep Fictions: A Digital Companion

III.3 Hudson

Christina Light is compared to Mephistopheles at multiple points in the novel, a connection that implies the young woman holds influential and devious powers that entice and distort Roderick's character. She is also referred to in this passage at the "tired princess," which correlates her with a "Sleeping Beauty" figure. When Roderick sees her, he declares "Immortal powers!" All of these attributions imply that Christina holds some mystical sway over Roderick.
